How to organize a pickup game without losing your mind
RETO Team1 min read

If you're the organizer, you know the pattern: you send the message on Sunday, three people reply, by 5pm Tuesday you're still four short, and at 7pm someone says they can't make it.
Start with the pitch, not the people
The pitch is the least flexible piece. Book it first, then build the group around that time.
Two things almost nobody publishes and you should confirm by phone:
- Does it have lights? This decides whether you can play at 8pm.
- Is it roofed? This decides whether you can play in October.
Fix the number up front
| Format | Players | Note |
|---|---|---|
| 5-a-side | 10 | Easiest to fill |
| 7-a-side | 14 | You'll need a waiting list |
| 11-a-side | 22 | Only with a large group |
Decide the number before you invite anyone. "Let's see who shows up" is how six people end up on a 7-a-side pitch.
Keep substitutes, not more invitees
When someone drops out, messaging the group again doesn't help. What helps is having three people who already said they're available and who you can text directly.
